Daring Droid: Tips for Success in the SWGoH R2-D2 Event

On Thursday, May 4th, Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes will launch a new event called Daring Droid with the opportunity to unlock the iconic Star Wars astromech droid R2-D2. Somehow included in a variety of storylines throughout the canon Star Wars timeline, R2-D2 appears in each of the numbered Star Wars movies. Here is what we know about R2-D2’s SWGoH event:

The versatile Support Droid, R2-D2, has been seen on the Death Star! Gather your best EMPIRE forces and defeat the famous crew of the Millennium Falcon to capture R2 in THE DARING DROID, a very rare multi-tiered event!
Can you foil the REBELS’ plans and capture this legendary astromech?

So we’re using our Empire toons to take on a slew of Rebels, likely Han or Stormtrooper Han, Leia, Chewie (not Clone Wars Chewbacca?), Luke (with a gun or lightsaber?) and presumably Old Ben. Sounds reasonable (especially with no Wiggs!) enough. Much like the Yoda and Emperor Palpatine events, R2-D2 will unlock at 5-stars and beating Tier 6 and Tier 7 gets you the shards for that star upgrade.

Tips to beat the Daring Droid Event

Look, none of us have even seen the event yet, but on paper this looks rather straightforward. Since we have time to prepare, here is my suggested lineup for the event based on availability of characters for the average player: Emperor Palpatine (lead), Darth Vader, Royal Guard, Magmatrooper, Grand Moff Tarkin. While those with TIE Fighter Pilot maxed or close to it will undoubtedly use him, I am basing this off of the availability to the majority of players.

Daring Droid R2-D2 SWGoH Event

Palpatine is available through the Emperor’s Demise event, Darth Vader from game achievements, Royal Guard from hard nodes, Cantina nodes and Bronzium packs, and the other two are an easy farm with Tarkin in the Squad Arena shipments and Magmatrooper in the Galactic War shipments.  The Cantina shipments also have Stormtrooper available, but few would be as foolish as I and put their resources toward him given his overall lack of effective use in SWGoH.

Using Emperor Palpatine as your lead, both Darth Vader and Grand Moff Tarkin gain huge value. Both will gain massive turn meter after inflicting debuffs on the Rebels – Vader with his Force Crush and Tarkin when using his Intimidation Tactics. In most cases both will be basically granted an extra turn after using this special ability, thus adding additional attacks throughout. Tarkin’s Intimidation Tactics also adds additional debuffs to Rebel enemies with the Speed Down debuff, and it is safe to say that these Rebels will be fast, so he seems like a very good play for the R2-D2 event. In addition, Magmatrooper’s Thermal Imploder reduces enemy turn meter so those not using TFP in this spot can benefit.

  1. I currently have:

    – 5* Vader L85 g9
    – 7* Tarkin L85 g8
    – 7* TFP L85 G9
    – 3* Shore Trooper L85 g10
    – 5* Royal Guard L85 g8

I think that should be a strong enough team, but Shore Trooper at 3* is really going to hamper me! 🙁 Both Vader and Royal Guard are only a few shards away from 6* so they should be easy, but all my other Empire characters are only 2/3*, any suggestions?

    • You will likely need 5 Empire toons at 5 stars to unlock R2 at 5 stars. It may not let you participate in Tier 5 unless you have a Magmatropper or Stormtrooper not mentioned.

  2. How many days do you think this event will last?

    • I would expect 7-10 days, but I would not put it past EA to make it 2-4 days to add challenge.

  3. How hard you think final tier will be? My toons:

    -7* Palpatine G11
    -7* Vader G11
    -7* Tarkin G10
    -7* TFP G10
    -7* Royal Guard G9

Solid. You should 6-star him just fine. I am thinking 7-star will be tough – really tough. Do not be surprised if you are not strong enough of just barely get by with that squad. If there is any way to get RG to Gear 10 in the next few days be sure to put your focus there.

  4. And referring to the above squad, Palapatine lead or Zader?

  5. With the decision to make some empire troops, empire troopers, will this affect their ability to participate in the event? For example, I have maxed palpatine, Vader, Tarkin, Royal Guard, Stormtrooper and Snowtrooper, if the storm trooper and snow trooper are turned into empire troopers by definition, will they still be able to compete in the event? I thought I had this in the bag, but if the class is changing, I might be screwed, right?

You will be fine. They are still Empire, but that is an additional classification.

When will this event come back around? I’m relatively new to the game and I’m gutted I can’t unlock my R2…

    • ljcool110 | May 4, 2017 at 7:51 am |

If it is like the Palpatine event, you are looking at 5-6 months before it comes back.

  8. Got my butt handed to me on Tier 3. But I’m level 41 and don’t have nearly the toons you guys are talking about. I’ve tried a few approaches. I’ve even managed to kill a few, but I never seem to be able to scratch R2D2.

Yeah, you just need a few months to power up. Focus on hitting the Daily Activities each day and complete as much of the GW as you can to maximize the rewards daily and when they bring this back you will be better prepared. I am expecting this comes back around Force Friday – Sept 1 or Sept 8 or so.

      • I hope it does come back. I feel like I’ve done pretty well, and the event says recommended L40+. I don’t know how someone L40 could survive that Tier 3 event. I’d love to unlock R2D2 because he’s done such a good job making me feel inept….

  9. With what I’m using now, i may win, just need 2 more 5* empire units, I have 5* emperor, 6* Vader, and 5* gm tarkin, who do I get to 5* with them

    • Whichever character you can get to 5* in time – the hard part for many is just having the characters starred up enough.

I was just wondering if it possible for me to finish tier VII with the following toons:
    Darth Vader
    TFP
    Magmatrooper
    Tarkin
    Royal Guard
Everyone at lvl. 80 and gear 8, maybe I can manage to bring a couple of them to G9.
    Let me know!

    • I think that getting them to Gear 9 will be quite helpful, as well as higher than level 80. Good luck!

      • LoneCruZader | October 17, 2017 at 10:35 am |

I’m level 82 at the moment, so I can level them a little bit, but the problem is gear level… They all need the same stuff dammit 🙂
        BTW thank you for answering!

  11. Last time i managed t6 with zader (lead), ep, tfp, tarkin and rg all maxed, g8, abilities lvl 7 and health modded. I tried the same on t7 but could not defeat r2 and chewi. Now i will try ep (lead) g10, vader g10, tfp g9, tarkin g9, rg (still) g8, all omegad and modded in a way similar to your recommendation. Do you think that will work or do i have to push rg to g9?
I could also use magma g9 insted of rg, but as tm manipulation is worthless in t7 im not quite sure if that made any sense.

  12. Thoughts on (all 7*)

    Zader g12
    Palpatine g11
    RG g11
    Tarkin g9
    Veers g8

Would you lead with EP or Zader?

    • Yes. Honestly, I think that you will be fine with either, but I prefer the Palpatine lead personally b/c he allows Vader and Tarkin to go twice when they land the DOTs.

  13. I know this is against the grain here but my zader saved my ass. For me at least a G10 Zader was better than a G8 Palp. I also made it through with a G10 RG but the Tarkin and Snow Trooper were squishy at G8.

  14. Thoughts on t7 (all 7* w/ mods)?
    EP lead, g10
    Vader, g9
    GMT, g9
    Magmatrooper, g9
    Stormtropper, g9

I can’t get past R2 and chewie…any advice on strategy or mods?

    • Guessing they are not all 5-dot mods – can you get better mods on them (with more speed) in time?

      • I can get health, and potency mods at 5-dots. Not any speed mods. I don’t have enough strong resistance toons. My speed mods are on EP and are either 2 or 3-dots.

  15. I finally beat t7 with
    Ep lead g10
    Vader g9
    GMT g8
    Stormtrooper g9
    RG g8

Heavily moded per this sites recommendations except when I didn’t have enough potency mods I subbed a health mod for EP & GMT
