SWGoH: Why doesn’t CG capitalize on new Star Wars content?

Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes

For years now, and especially since The Mandalorian and other Disney Plus content has been released, fans have been asking “why doesn’t CG capitalize on new Star Wars content?” Questions about this are abound across Reddit and the EA Capital Games SWGoH forums, and they are asked by the YouTubers and other fellow Content Creators, but I feel that history gives us our answer. Let’s take a look at the reasons why I believe that CG is not quick to jump on new Star Wars content and release it right away.

  1. There is a difference in how they handle movies and Disney Plus Star Wars content. If you look at the history, the content in movies comes much sooner than with the Disney Plus shows. We received new content and characters immediately around Rogue One, Solo: A Star Wars Story and all three movies in the new trilogy. But we waited forever to get content from The Mandalorian seasons 1 and 2, and still have nothing unique to The Book of Boba Fett. But note how the Bad Batch characters came to the game as the series was on Disney Plus. This stems from them being introduced in Season 7 of The Clone Wars and establishing enough about each of the four characters to build a kit for each. Of course Omega was released later, after the Bad Batch series was established. In addition, “dad bod Boba” and Fennec Shand were characters we saw in The Mandalorian Season 2, so their release prior to The Book of Boba Fett was because we already had content around both. More on this below.
  2. They’re been burnt in the past. Think back to Rogue One if you have been playing SWGoH for a long, long time like I have. We got both Bistan and Pao early, but do you remember Bistan and Pao in the movie? Yeah, pretty unimpressive. LucasFilm shared info with EA Capital Games back in the production days of Rogue One and later cut much of the screen time for these characters. Remember the drama about the reshoots for Rogue One in 2016, months after filming had wrapped up? We also got a generic Scarif Rebel Pathfinder character as well, as all three were meant to help promote the game and none are significant in the Star Wars universe at all.
  3. They do not have the full picture on all of the new characters. While I am sure that EA Capital Games has some information that they are contractually sworn to secrecy on about new Star Wars content, they also need to have established traits for the characters. Looking back to the addition of the Phoenix Rebels to SWGoH, they were added in their Season 3 forms as that was the directive from LucasFilm to the studio at the time. How do I know? That is what they told me when I was part of the EA SWGoH GameChangers program years ago. Kanan Jarrus did not have the shield over his eyes in Seasons 1 & 2, Ezra and Sabine changed their hair each season, and there was a Phantom ship used in earlier seasons that was lost/sacrificed in the show long before the Phantom II was necessary. Even the Bad Batch characters we have in SWGoH follow this, as they had enough info on each character, but the storyline of Crosshair remains up in the air and yet he is not in the game to this date. So while I am sure they have some info on these series, Disney does not want any more Mike Zeroh videos that are “all to do about” something else that was leaked to him, so they have to keep quiet on more specific details.

In the end, it really does feel like Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes misses out on great opportunities to capitalize on the popularity of the new content that LucasFilm puts out. But one thing we know about Star Wars fans, we are happy to open our wallets for new merchandise and other Star Wars-related content. So really, you could even make the argument that CG doesn’t capitalize on new Star Wars content because they simply do not have to.
