Welcome to the latest article in our series about the popular game Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes where we take a look at the best SWGoH mods for each character. While I do not claim to have all of the answers in this game, I do my research and have used every toon I write about extensively.
Today’s toon to review mods for is Grand Admiral Thrawn. Available to unlock for free (this often gets overlooked) in the Artist of War event, Thrawn can be a real difference-maker on any roster.
Looking at Thrawn’s best mods, he was once one of the toughest to decide on how to set him up. Some suggested Speed or Offense mods, others Critical Chance. I have been running a 7-star Grand Admiral Thrawn in the Squad Arena since the original Artist of War event in June 2017, so I feel my experience with Thrawn is as extensive as you will find. If you have another way that works you are welcome to share it with our readers in the comments below.
Main Focus: Speed. Once again, in order to be effective in this game and maximize Thrawn’s awesome kit, you have to be fast. I value Thrawn in SWGoH so highly that he was one of my first three characters to get a newly-sliced 6-dot mod (back when that was a big deal). My Grand Admiral Thrawn has historically been over 280 Speed and having him near or above 300 is recommended for endgame players.
Additional Areas to Focus: Offense, Critical Chance and Survivability. Grand Admiral Thrawn is one of the Elite characters in SWGoH, so keeping him alive is important so that you can maximize the use of Fracture. I recommend a lot of Protection given Grand Admiral’s Command grants Thrawn and the selected ally 40% Protection recovery and, if you use him as a Leader like I have over time, Legendary Strategist grants Empire allies 15% Max Protection. In addition, if you have a Zeta on Thrawn’s Leader Ability Empire allies recover 2% Protection whenever they gain or lose a status effect. I used a full set of 4 Offense mods on Thrawn early on so that his hits were harder but switched to a Speed set of 4 as this makes Fracture more effective in my opinion. I also had a Critical Chance set on Thrawn to boost his CC number to help Fracture and his basic hit even harder, but I find that added CC is lost with this character. After years of using Grand Admiral Thrawn extensively I have settled in on using Speed mods and a set of Health or Tenacity mods (with high Speed secondaries) to improve survivability.
Speed Priority: 9/10 – Grand Admiral Thrawn is one of the best non-Galactic Legend characters in the game and has use at all levels of SWGoH. In addition, Thrawn is a key piece on several counter teams set to defeat Galactic Legends in SWGoH. As a result he needs to be very fast and use some of your best Speed mods and high Speed secondaries.
In-game Mod Recommendations: Speed & Critical Chance. While I agree with the need for Speed with Grand Admiral Thrawn, the Critical Chance recommendation is perplexing. Thrawn has nothing in his kit to enhance his Critical Damage and already has a low Special CC stat. Even at Relic 8, Thrawn has just over 30% Special Critical Chance and the standard base 150% CD, and while his attacks are not terrible, his Special Damage stat is not even in the top 10% of all SWGoH characters.
Ideal Mod Setup for SWGoH Grand Admiral Thrawn:
I recommend the use of a full Speed set of 4 and 2 Health or Tenacity mods on Thrawn with as much Speed as possible from the secondaries as well. Here is my recommended approach for mods on Grand Admiral Thrawn:
- Transmitter (Square) – Speed mod with a primary focus on offense and a secondary focus on speed, health, tenacity and protection
- Receiver (Arrow) – Speed mod with a primary focus on speed and a secondary focus on health, protection, tenacity and offense/defense
- Processor (Diamond) – Speed mod with a primary focus on defense and a secondary focus on speed, health, defense and protection
- Holo-Array (Triangle) – Speed mod with a primary focus on protection and a secondary focus on speed, protection, critical chance and offense
- Data-Bus (Circle) – Health mod with a primary focus on protection and a secondary focus on speed, protection, critical chance and offense
- Multiplexer (Plus) – Health mod with a primary focus on protection and a secondary focus on speed, protection, health/defense and offense

I run a similar set up (except I have offence primary on Triangle), so I’m wondering why defense primary on cross?
Honestly it what I had available, but since it ain’t broke… I like where you are going with this though. Early on he was a bit too squishy, but now looking at the Mod it is a +12 speed, +5.72% CC on secondaries – that is why.
It would be nice to have a snapshot of the Character with mods just to see the power totals so that it can be compared to other mods comparisons.

I feel like this is probably an ignorant question, but why is crit chance and damage useful for thrawn? Isn’t he all special damage, so offense is more useful?
CC and CD impacts special damage just like it doe with physical damage. That is a common point of confusion in the game.
