SWGoH Zeta Review: First Order Stormtrooper

SWGoH - First Order

Originally one of the weakest characters in Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes, the First Order Stormtrooper got a rework in early 2017 which made him much more durable and added a Zeta Ability. First Order Stormtrooper - SWGoHThe rework of the entire First Order quickly turned the faction into a relevant one in the game and we expect to see more First Order characters added in SWGoH around the premier of Episode VIII: The Last Jedi in late 2017.

The First Order Stormtrooper Zeta reads “Whenever First Order Stormtrooper uses any Ability he has a 50% chance to call a random ally to Assist, dealing 50% less damage unless they are First Order, then grants them Advantage for 2 turns if they were First Order.” Basically, each turn for FOST has a 50% chance to call an ally to assist. When combined with Captain Phasma’s Leader Zeta Ability, which also grants extra attacks, any First Order team will pile on the extra attacks. Toss in Zetas on Kylo Ren and FO TIE Pilot for maximum effectiveness and damage output.

First Order Stormtrooper Zeta Review

Gameplay: Gameplay with a Zeta First Order Stormtrooper is rather enjoyable simply because getting several extra attacks from the Zeta added means knocking enemies off can come rather quickly. However, since the extra attacks are based on a chance of an extra attack, the inconsistency is rather annoying and heavily based on RNG.

Squad Arena: Using a Zeta First Order team in the Squad Arena is not something I would recommend unless you have the Zetas on Captain Phasma, Kylo Ren, First Order Stormtrooper and First Order TIE Pilot. Even then, this team’s defense is rather poor and it is not a team that is going to place you in the Top 20 of a highly competitive shard consistently.

SWGoH - Zeta Materials

Rancor: First Order teams are okay against the Rancor, but given First Order Officer is the lone member who can remove Turn Meter, the key to Rancor dominance, the FO is not a solo the Rancor team.

AAT/HAAT: The First Order, with all four current Zetas, can be a very effective team in Phase 2 of HAAT as seen in this Smithie D video and elsewhere online. Again, the extra attacks and TM gained from Captain Phasma, FOO and Kylo Ren’s AOE are the keys, but compared to the Resistance and other teams that have popped up, the First Order is not the ideal p2 HAAT team.

Territory Battles: FOST and his First Order allies have value in Imperial Retaliation, the Dark Side Territory Battles as several battles call for Dark Side toons with no specific faction. While First Order Stormtrooper’s Zeta and the additional attacks are a nice to have, especially when paired with a Zeta Captain Phasma, the Zeta ability is certainly no game changer in the extra difficult battles.

Territory Wars: How FOST’s Zeta will impact Territory Wars in SWGoH is still in the early stages. We will be happy to add more thoughts on how this Zeta translates in the near future.

How I Use First Order Stormtrooper: FOST works great in a team of fellow First Order members, which is where I always use him. Together with a Zeta Captain Phasma and Zeta Kylo Ren, extra attacks are plentiful and gearing FOST up has really been worth the effort as he is a very solid toon.

My Rating of First Order Stormtrooper: A Zeta on FOST should only be used as a bigger plan with a fully-geared First Order team with multiple Zetas. Given more FO toons should be in the works for the promotion of The Last Jedi, the Zeta on FOST seems like a bit of a gamble at this time. I give it a 4 of 10 because it is dependent on Capitan Phasma’s Zeta to maximize effectiveness and due to concerns over its relevance/necessity as more First Order toons are added.
