SWGoH: Best Mods for Kylo Ren Unmasked

Welcome to the latest article in our series about the popular game Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes where we take a look at the best mods for individual SWGoH characters. While I do not claim to have all of the answers in this game, I do my research and have used every toon I write about extensively.

Kylo Ren Unmasked - SWGoHToday’s character to review mods for is the new version of Kylo Ren, Kylo Ren Unmasked (KRU). Now scarred and without his mask, KRU is just the second First Order character in the game with a leadership ability, along with Captain Phasma. Kylo Ren Unmasked and First Order SF TIE Pilot were first announced by Gaming-fans.com & our fellow GameChangers program members on November 7th, 2017 and became available in marquee events two days later. As part of EA/CG’s SWGoH GameChangers program, I was able to test out KRU at 4-stars and power him up to 7-stars and Gear 12 to see the results and test out different mod sets. My findings are below.

Main Focus: I always say that every character needs speed, but in all honesty that is not true. So let me revise this by saying 95% of all SWGoH characters need Speed, and Kylo Ren Unmasked is no different. However, given the way his kit reads and plays my choice here is Critical Chance as the main focus if used as a Leader. Here is why – “When a First Order ally scores a Critical Hit, they gain 20% Turn Meter,” reads the text from his leadership. This is exactly why the original Kylo Ren in SWGoH had his AoE attack adjusted. Add in the TM gains from the abilities of Captain Phasma, First Order Officer and the original Kylo, and Speed is less of a need here and Critical Chance now becomes more valuable to all First Order toons. Note that is you are not using him as the leader of a First Order squad, more Speed will be needed if you want him attacking more often.

Additional Areas to Focus: Speed, Critical Damage, Health, Protection and Potency. Given his leader ability grants his First Order allies +25 Speed at level 7, and +30 Speed with a Zeta, getting KRU over 200 could be a priority, but my initial tests have focused on much higher CC and less on Speed. Critical Damage goes hand in hand with high CC, and his leader ability grants First Order allies another 40% CD so make sure to at least get this number to 180%, if not the 216% max (as shown). Because of the taunts, survivability is important, and both Health and Protection are needed, but I would place more emphasis on Health. His Halt special attack sees Kylo Ren Unmasked gain 10% Health and his unique, Scarred, sees him gain 8% Health whenever he takes damage. In addition, under his leadership all First Order allies gain 5% Health and 5% Protection when they gain a status effect, so build both stats up to improve his survivability. Finally, his basic, Aggressive Strike, can inflict Tenacity Down on enemies, so a bit of added Potency is also recommended.


Ideal Mod Setup for SWGoH Kylo Ren Unmasked:

The ideal mods setup can differ from person to person, even from day to day. I have found that on my personal account I have a few awesome mods with 4-6% CC boosts from the secondaries, but because they were low Speed or none at all, and the constant need for Speed in SWGoH, I could rarely justify them on my top toons. KRU is that character to put these mods on. After testing Kylo Ren Unmasked out at different gear levels and both changing and moving mods around, here is my preferred mod setup for KRU.

  • Transmitter (Square) – Potency mod with a primary focus on offense and a secondary focus on critical chance, speed, potency and health
  • Receiver (Arrow) – Critical Damage mod with +30 speed (secondary stats like critical chance and health are preferred)
  • Processor (Diamond) – Potency mod with a primary focus on defense and a secondary focus on critical chance, speed, health and protection
  • Holo-Array (Triangle) – Critical Damage mod with critical damage +36% (this could be substituted for a +12% critical chance primary if you use KRU as a leader to benefit from the TM gain on critical hits)
  • Data-Bus (Circle) – Critical Damage with primary focus on health and a secondary focus on critical chance, speed, defense and protection
  • Multiplexer (Plus) – Critical Damage mod with primary focus on health and a secondary focus on critical chance, speed, potency and protection

Note: Transmitter, Processor and Data-Bus mods are MUCH more common. If you can maximize the stats from these using a MK V, Tier A mod that is ideal.

  2. ok after looking at Matt(UMK) He looks like he could be a big help to solo rancor. what is your thoughts?

  3. KRU? I believe you mean Matt the Radar Technician (see SNL Undercover Boss: Starkiller Base).

    The mod suggestions are spot on. Matt is a far superior leader for First Order than Phasma is these days. He works best with all the oddball mods that aren’t worth throwing away, but aren’t really ideal for other toons. I went for Health, Potency, and Critical Chance sets. I got decent speed on him from secondaries but also a lot of protection from secondaries as well. Even at G10 and only his leadership zeta’d at the time of this writing, he’s doing good.

  4. Any thoughts on focusing on Health or Protection mods? With 4/5 protection mods and at least 1500 protection on every mod i got my Sith Trooper up to 90K protection and 35k health. 5% each static effect adds up a lot. Any thoughts for doing this to Kylo Ren Unmasked?
