Welcome to the Darth Malak mods guide, the latest article in a series about Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes where we take a look at the best mods for individual characters. While I do not claim to have all of the answers in this game, I do my research and have used every toon I write about extensively, and Darth Revan is one character I have used a lot. These are mod recommendations based on the character’s kit and actual gameplay to help you in your quest to dominate the Galaxy of Heroes holotables.
Today I’ll be looking at mods for Darth Malak. Originally added to the game a few weeks after Darth Revan first joined SWGoH, Capital Games announced the Star Forge Showdown on Wednesday, April 10th, a weekend event to unlock Darth Malak that ran April 12-14, 2019 for the first time. The addition of Darth Malak certainly already made Darth Revan Sith Empire teams even stronger as it immediately devalued Sith Assassin, a character who has little value in the game other than to have been a temporary 5th Sith Empire member at one time. Let’s take a look at the best mods to place on Darth Revan to make this exclusive character even stronger.
Main Focus: After months of play with Darth Revan and Darth Malak I am changing this up a bit. I have fought several hundred Arena battles, likely in the thousands, with Malak on my team and against me, and I believe his survivability is the #1 area to focus on, specifically Protection. Malak loses all Protection and turns it into Health at the start of all battles, and Protection can be as high as 24% as a primary mod stat while Health can only climb to 16%. Thus, high Protection numbers from both the primary and secondary mod stats will be turned into Health and will be higher than using mods with high Health stats.
Additional Areas to Focus: Speed, Potency, Offense, Tenacity & more survivability. Once again, despite the efforts of Mods 2.0 to deemphasize Speed in Galaxy of Heroes, the stat continues to be the biggest deciding factor for most META match-ups, whether the Squad Arena, Territory Wars or the Grand Arena. While you do not need Darth Malak to be as fast as his buddy Darth Revan or even Bastila Shan (Fallen), having him taking turns more often will only make your team harder to beat. Potency is a stat you do not want to go too crazy on because of Darth Revan’s Force Storm special applies 5 stacks of the Ferocity debuff to Sith Empire allies which reads in-game as “-15% Defense and Tenacity per stack, +8% Offense and Potency per stack.” Thus, a single application of 5 stacks of Ferocity means +40% Offense and Potency on the character which shows why we do not want to focus too heavily on this important stat. Just like with Darth Revan, note that Offense, unlike Potency, is a stat you can never have too much of. A focus from secondary stats on Offense and Critical Chance, and possibly a Triangle with a Critical Damage primary, can help that stacking Offense hit harder and harder, but for Malak Offense is better than CC/CD. On the survivability side of things, Protection is where you want to be of course, but added Health and Defense is not a bad idea, just go for Health and Protection ahead of Defense when you have the option. Finally, a strong Tenacity stat is highly recommended – like over 100% strong. When you get down to those battles with Darth Malak versus 1-3 enemies or vice versa, whether on offense or defense in SWGoH, that Tenacity stat and Offense will be the deciding factors in winning or losing.
In-game Mod Recommendations: Tenacity. My initial thought was “wow, what am I missing?” So as I re-read the kit again I focus in on the Jaws of Life unique ability. It reads that Darth Malak gains 35% Tenacity when less than 75% Health, doubled at less than 50% Health and tripled under 25%. So if Malak starts with 44% Tenacity (Gear 11 +3 pieces base Tenacity) and hits 75% Health, his Tenacity becomes 88%. At 50% Health he will then have 132% and at 25% Health that becomes 176% Tenacity – certainly enough to ward off more detrimental effects. But also factor in that Revan’s constant applications of Ferocity means -15% Tenacity per stack, so this is going to be a mathematical puzzle to say the least. My conclusion from this, and from my gameplay after months of constant use of Darth Malak is that Tenacity is certainly a big deal with his kit, but getting the right stats from your mods is key. If you can get 6 awesome Tenacity mods with the right secondary stats (Speed, Offense, Tenacity, Potency, Health & Protection) then go for it.
Ideal Mod Setup for SWGoH Darth Malak:
With the Darth Revan Sith Empire team still holding strong as the top or second best team in the game nearly a year after his release, having good mods on your Darth Malak is going to be key to your success. You are going to want a fast, high-protection Darth Malak with some very strong Offense and Tenacity while not forgetting Health and Potency. Thus, here are my mod recommendations for Darth Malak:
- Transmitter (Square) – Tenacity mod with offense primary and a secondary focus on speed, protection, offense and potency
- Receiver (Arrow) – Health/Tenacity mod with speed primary and a secondary focus on protection, offense, tenacity and potency
- Processor (Diamond) – Health/Tenacity mod with defense primary and a secondary focus on speed, protection, offense and potency
- Holo-Array (Triangle) – Health/Tenacity mod with offense or protection primary and a secondary focus on speed, tenacity, health and either offense or protection
- Data-Bus (Circle) – Tenacity mod with protection primary and a secondary focus on speed, protection, offense and tenacity
- Multiplexer (Plus) – Health/Tenacity mod with protection primary and a secondary focus on speed, offense, health and tenacity (if you do not have 3 tenacity sets consider a tenacity primary for the multiplexer)
